General

Polycarbonate is a real high performing material. It is use in bulletproof glass, safety goggles and CD's for example. It's key properties are strength, clarity and high temperature resistance. It also needs a high processing temperature of 270 °C. So make sure your printer is able to handle that. You may need PC if: - you need very strong parts - high temperature resistance (up to 120 °C) - low flammability

Polycarbonate is a well known engineering material, and used in a variety of applications. The transparency, strength and temperature resistance make it an excellent material for glass replacement and lenses. The high temperature resistance (up to 121 °C) enables sterilization of polycarbonate products by means of an autoclave.

Printing Guidelines

Print settings of polycarbonate differ mainly because of the higher heat deflection temperature of 121 °C. We have used polycarbonate in our printers using the following parameters.

• Nozzle temperature 275-285 °C
• Heated bed temperature +/- 115 °C
• Printing speed 20-25 mm/s
• Layer height 0.2-0.4 mm
• Bed material Kapton on glass -

Use the above values as a starting point, optimal values for your specific printer may vary from the values shown above, depending on e.g. nozzle diameter, printing speed and layer height. For large objects, a raise in bed temp can be necessary. A heated chamber is not necessary for small objects, but will definitely improve the succes when printing larger items.
